ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY PROGRAM
Fire drills will be held annually in each school building. Each building administrator will develop procedures designed to accomplish the evacuation of school buildings as quickly and efficiently as possible. The frequency and timing of drills will follow the Life Safety Code recommendations:
1.) All schools must hold two (2) fire drills during the first two (2) weeks of school.
2.) All schools must hold one (1) drill during Fire Prevention Week (first week in October.)
3.) Grades K-8 must hold seven (7) additional drills during the year (total of ten.)
4.) Grades 9-12 must hold three (3) additional drills during the year (total of six.)
Building administrators shall keep a record of all fire drills held in their schools, stating the time the drill was held and the time required for evacuation of the building. This information will be reported to the Superintendent or his/her designee, after each drill. If local fire officials wish, they will be notified before each drill and are encouraged to participate.
Staff members will receive an annual orientation to this procedure, before the first fire drill of the year, and the fire drill procedure will be prominently displayed in each classroom with at least two (2) unobstructed planned routes of escape clearly drawn out. Building administrators will ensure that each teacher acquaints the students under his/her care with designated evacuation routes during the first week of school.
