Facilities:
The start of school has been busy with projects and onboarding of new staff. We did have a part time maintenance person step away from the role and take another job. This person will continue on with the school in a transportation role once they have received their endorsements for bussing.
Due to events at the Garrett School we have been tasked to build a couple of Seclusion rooms for students when they cannot control themselves safely. These rooms were not budgeted for in the past budget season. Currently we are at approximately $7000.00 in materials to construct these rooms. This does not include the man hours for our staff to construct the room. We are hoping that there are no other unforeseen expenses to complete this project.
Recently we have experienced some sewer issues at the High School. During the investigation process it was determined that the source of the issue was due to the overhang that was installed years ago out front of the school. During the construction process of the awning, the contractor drilled into the top of the 6-inch sewer line. Over the years’ dirt and rocks have been getting washed into the school sewer lines and it eventually ended up in the main line on the streets. When excavating to fix the line a large cavity was discovered underneath the concrete support to the main entrance awning. Fortunately, this was discovered prior to any structural issues with the main entrance to the school. After replacing approximately 20 feet of sewer line Vortex Companies came back to jet and remove the sludge in the main lines as far back into the building as they could. There was a considerable amount of sludge that was in the lines from the years of back up. Although we have cleaned sections of the main lines of the sewer there is a possibility that there could be other large sludge deposits further up the lines. The Sewer line materials are approximately 45 years into a 50 – 80-year life expectancy. One of the current materials used in the main sewer lines is prone to sudden collapse as it ages. We will be getting quotes from Vortex on Epoxy coating and cleaning lines in the schools. This would give an estimated 50 year extended life expectancy to the current lines. Rangeley school district recently had this work completed due to numerous sewer backups into the building. As I completed this report on 9/29 it was reported that we could possibly have another back up into the kitchen at the high school.
We will have C.O. Beck back to CHS for more repairs to the existing EDM roof. Currently patches and repairs that have been done in the past are failing and water leaks have been discovered with the recent rain storms.
On 9/29, Maine School Management Association (MSMA) was in to review our buildings for insurance purposes. The representative is looking for violations that pose safety risks to persons or property while they are here. They also ensure that we are following laws and regulations governing schools and buildings. Although there were some findings it appears that the school district has done well compared to other findings that he has found in recent visits. We will know more shortly and we can share that information with the school board.
On 9/30, Affinity Lighting will do their initial walk through of the Solon School to prep for installation. After review, we will receive a schedule for installation.
