SOLICITATIONS IN SCHOOLS

DISTRIBUTION/POSTING OF PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL

RSU #74 School Board wishes to minimize disruption of its students and employees, and to discourage the impression that it has endorsed a particular product., service, or viewpoint, RSU #74 will abide by the following policy regarding the distribution of promotional material in its schools.

1.) Materials originating from sources outside the school system shall be posted only in the area reserved for community posters in each building. The posters must be student-oriented and have the sponsoring organization’s name prominently displayed. No material may be posted that would interrupt the educational process; violate the rights of others, including material that is defamatory; invade the privacy of others; infringe on a copyright; or be obscene, vulgar, or indecent.

2.) Commercial publications may be posted or distributed if their purpose is to further a school activity, such as graduation, class pictures or class rings.

3.) Schools shall not sell tickets, collect funds, distribute, or display advertising literature to or through students other than for school-sponsored events in conjunction with school support groups such as the Boosters or PTO’s. These activities will only take place during non-academic times (i.e. before/after school lunch, recess).

4.) Business partners working directly with the schools of the District may have permission from the Superintendent to distribute literature of events which will directly benefit students or the community, provided it contains a minimum amount of commercial advertising.

5.) Distribution of information about local Town Recreation Programs, including information about local chapters of the Boys and Girls Scouts, is permissible.

6.) The RSU #74 School Board through its Superintendent or designee reserves the right to approve requests from community groups on an individual basis.
